Should You Import a Hot Wallet Seed Phrase Into a Hardware Wallet?

If you already use MetaMask or another browser/mobile wallet, the tempting shortcut is obvious: buy a hardware wallet, choose “restore,” and type the old seed phrase into the new device. That is usually the wrong move.

Short answer

For real cold storage, create a new wallet on the hardware device and transfer funds to the new addresses. Importing a seed phrase that was generated or stored on an internet-connected phone or computer keeps the old hot-wallet risk attached to the new device.

Why importing the old seed is not cold storage

A hardware wallet protects keys because the recovery phrase and signing process stay off the everyday computer or phone. Ledger explicitly warns not to seed a MetaMask recovery phrase into a Ledger device because MetaMask phrases are generated online and are not treated as secure cold-storage recovery phrases. MetaMask gives the same practical setup pattern: create a new seed phrase on the hardware wallet, then move assets from the old account to the hardware-wallet-controlled account.

What if the old wallet still works?

If the old phrase was ever typed into a browser extension, copied into cloud notes, saved in a screenshot, entered into a mobile app, or exposed to a suspicious website, a hardware device cannot erase that history. Anyone who already has the old phrase can still restore it elsewhere and spend first.

Safer migration order

Set up the hardware wallet as new. Write down or configure its official backup method offline. Send a small test transfer to the new address. After it arrives, move tokens first and leave enough native gas coin for final fees. Then move the remaining balance. Do not reset the old wallet until you have confirmed the new recovery method works.

Using MetaMask with a hardware wallet

Connecting Ledger or Trezor to MetaMask is different from importing a seed. In the safer flow, MetaMask acts as the interface, but the hardware wallet holds the key and approves signatures. Never type the hardware-wallet seed into MetaMask to “connect” it.
